Day 7 - 30/3/2011 Rest day - hahaha

Day 7 – 30/3/2011 Rest day at Port Augusta.
Well today was supposed to be a rest day, I thought that meant lazing around reading a book and drinking coffee?? Oh sorry that thought has come from watching the grey nomads around us!!  Rest day for parents of active children meant says ‘go play in the park!!” “stop fighting with your brother / sister!!”  Only joking today was very relaxed.  We started the day off slowly, taking the kids photos from their cameras to their flash drives and them spending time on their written diaries.
But no rest for the wicked,  Pete was off and racing  doing maintenance jobs on the van, I have now decided that after cable ties, a rivet gun is Pete’s favourite camping toy, honest I think he replaced every rivet in the caravan, well at least every rivet in the front awning.  See last night the wind came up and the front awning shook and shook and kept Pete awake, he wasn’t having that happen again tonight, so out he was hat on and hard at work.  At some stage I even saw him brandishing the cordless power drill, I didn’t know he packed that!!
After all the caravan maintenance jobs were finished we headed into town to stock up on groceries, we had planned a morning of fishing but the wind today was so strong it would have been very unpleasant on the water, Zac was most disappointed!!.  I discovered standing in the check out line at Coles that fishing would have been a far cheaper option to grocery shopping…..I have no idea how someone survives with the prices of groceries in Port Augusta, oh well we all insist on eating.
At some stage during the morning the children discovered by far the best attraction at the Big 4 – the TV room, my where they impressed!!
After lunch we headed over to the Wadlata Outback Centre, unreal if you are ever in Port Augusta I highly recommend a visit to the Outback Centre, it is informative and interactive, I never realised how little attention I paid during history in high school.  I learnt more today than I did in al those years at school.  The kids to were very interested.  The Outback Centre introduced the kids to Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and they learnt an alternative version of creation to the one they have learnt from their parents and at school!! This lead to some interesting questions?? Like did Jesus visit Australia??  Oh well it is good to question our beliefs. We spent a few hours in the centre.

Back at the caravan Claudia and I got organised to bake tomorrow’s morning tea, yep that’s right we baked – chocolate chip muffins!! Yum the caravan smelt delicious.

When getting ready for bed I asked Callum had he had a good day, he promptly replied “yes”  I said “what was the best thing about today” he promptly replied “getting to watch biggest loser we haven’t seen that for ages”……unreal!!  Zac chimed in “mum my best bit was going to the Outback Centre” thank goodness someone besides me liked it!!.
Off to Woomera and Roxby Downs tomorrow!! Leaving the shower and toilet behind for a while- now we get to try out the camp shower and thunderbox!! Can’t wait………
