Day 13 – 6/4/2011 Mt Connor Lookout – Yulara
Well I might have jumped the gun yesterday announcing to the world – or at least my family – that Mt Connor was Uluru BUT today what we saw really was Uluru and it was magnificent. We have booked into the campground at the Ayers Rock Resort and by lunch we had planned where we were going to walk tomorrow. We took today as a rest day as again we had had a couple of big days of travelling, we will be here for at least three days, hopefully more.
After lunch we wandered over to the visitor information centre where we walked through an interesting display about the area and the kids learnt more about flora and fauna that live in the desert. There was also interesting information about the local Aboriginal people who own the land that we are camped on. I was also able to explain to the kids why we wouldn’t be climbing Uluru.
We picked up some groceries at the local IGA and headed back to camp for a rest and book read. All along the way through we were able to just glance up and see Uluru and the Olga’s!!.
Not the best photo as it was taken on my phone during our walk!! but tomorrow we will be up close and personal!!
The kids spent the afternoon swimming in the pool as it is really warm here and by 7:30pm they were falling asleep at the table so it was bath and bed!! They know tomorrow is an early day. The kids though, did get to see Uluru at sunset from a lookout just near our camp.
Addition by Pete:
Just after we pulled up and set up here, another couple pulled in next to us. It’s a small world, they were the same grey nomads I had befriended at Port Augusta, Marco and Anne. They are originally from Dapto, but are spending their retirement years based in the Gold Coast. They are a very pleasant couple. Their son arrived by plane this morning to spend 10 days on the road with them. They are heading in the same general direction as us, so there’s a good chance we’ll see them again after here
Hi Pete Al Zac Callum & Claudia. just caught up with your blog. It['s fantastic and is making me very jealous. hearing about some of the places we've bee, seeing them GREEN and with water - amazing. One question - the newspaper in the thunderbox - what's with that? We've got one but I've never seen that. Keep happy. Fran
