Day 83 14/06/2011 Port Hedland – Karijini National Park

Day 83 14/06/2011 Port Hedland – Karijini National Park
Well after a rather noisy sleep we dragged ourselves out of bed and drove to Karijini National Park.  As we had camped by the road we were frequently disturbed by lots of road trains rumbling by!!!

Fortescue Falls

Karijini was one of those “must see” places that had come highly recommended by those we had met on the road and those we spoke to before we started the trip so we were keen to see if the reality of Karijini met our expectations.  The drive out to Karijini was interesting in that as we got closer to the national park the landscape drastically changed from flat, flat, flat to hilly and if possible the soil became even redder.
Once we had booked in and set up camp the kids took off on their bikes to look around! After a restful afternoon we decided to go for a short walk to check out Fortescue Falls Lookout.  This was a short walk but the view was spectacular, we decided that tomorrow we would tackle the walk down to the bottom of the falls.

Iron Stone banding!!

Whilst we were happy to be back inland and away from the windy west coast we weren’t so happy to be back with the desert flies and the cooler evenings.  It was apparent that when the sun headed west for the night it was going to get very cold so much so that Claudia and I both went to bed with tracksuit pants and a jumper on.  Pete and the boys decided to brave it out in their normal pyjamas………..
