Day 94 25/06/2011 Cape Range National Park - Yardie Creek

Day 94 25/06/2011 Cape Range National Park - Yardie Creek
Unbelievably we woke to grey skies!! Oh my gosh, where did those clouds come from!!  Now it was starting to feel like a typical summer seaside holiday with the potential for rain!!  In lieu of snorkelling we decided to head off and explore the Yardie Creek Gorge. Zac had absconded to fish so Pete and I headed off on the bushwalk with Claudia and Callum.  The walk was pretty but the best part was we got to watch the storm clouds move up the coast straight towards us!! In fact we were halfway back when the heavens opened up and the rain came.  We made it back to the caravan soaking wet but laughing!!
We are camped bear the green bushes on the right hand side.
We could see the storm coming!!
After lunch, frustrated with children in the caravan, I went down the creek with Zac’s cast net.  Zac has spent most of the trip wanting to fish but today he was determined that unless he had shop purchased bait he couldn’t possibly fish anymore, rather he would sulk around the caravan.  He had had an unsuccessful morning fishing at the creek and got wet in the downpour, he was grumpy, cold and probably a little tired.
I reminded him that friends from home who had stayed at Yardie Creek previously had told us about how they had caught bait fish in the creek and then gone fishing off the beach; Zac wasn’t convinced that this was the solution for him and refused to come with me with the cast net.

Therefore I happily left Zac with Pete looking unconvinced!! I was in a bit of a pickle though as I had no idea how to cast the cast net!!  Oh well, I gave it my best and actually caught one little mullet so into the bait bucket it went.  It wasn’t long before Zac joined me and we had enough baby mullet to go fishing!!  So with rods in hand and fresh bait in the bucket we walked about 1km up the beach to a little rock shelf and we threw our lines in, I was so hoping that my grumpy son caught a fish.  My prayers were answered on his second cast Zac caught and landed a Spangled Emperor, 41cm and a beauty it was!! My grumpy son was very happy he even thanked his mum for taking him fishing!!

Zac and his spangled emperor!!

Back at camp Claudia and Callum spent the afternoon playing with some kids who were in for the night, they had a great time running over the sand dunes hiding from each other. After dinner they went off to find kangaroos but only managed to stumble across crabs on the beach.
We had fish for dinner and it was a great day after all, the kids went to bed tired and happy.

Another Cape Range National Park gorgeous sunset
