Day 96 27/06/2011 Cape Range National Park – Yardie Creek & Turquoise Bay

Hhhmmm not much happening this morning, Zac off catching little fish in the creek and Callum and Claudia playing lompos.  We decided that we would do some school work when Zac returned about 10am, whilst being grumbly about it the kids each did some tasks.  We were disturbed just before lunch by a knock at the door, unbelievably we had visitors.  A family that we had met at Coral Bay were dropping in on their way to the Yardie Gorge Boat Tour, Claudia was ecstatic because they had daughters who she had enjoyed playing with.  The visitors stayed for a while and then returned and we enjoyed lunch together.

After lunch I was feeling smug because the kids had had some educational input so we decided to head to Turquoise Bay for an afternoon of snorkelling.  The bay is beautiful and calm and had an amazing array of marine life, I even spotted an octopus hiding amongst the rocks.  I never cease to be amazed by the tiny fish that live in the coral but I am stunned that there is any coral left after watching the huge wrasse crunch into it.  If you float quietly above the bigger wrasse you can actually hear them chomping the coral.

We all enjoyed the snorkel and one by one the kids exited the water so Pete and I were able to cruise around until we were just too cold to stay in any longer.  By the time we got out Callum had dug himself a huge hole in the sand and was trying to stop the encroaching tide from getting in.  This was all fun right up until it was time to go, when he realised that he was going to have to get in the water to wash off all the sand.  There were a number of squeals because the water was cool but with the wind it felt even colder.

A very lazy but pleasurable day.
