Day 104 05/07/2011 Whalebone Campground – Kalbarri
Today started early, about 4am to be exact with Pete jumping out of bed mumbling something about a mouse in the garbage!! I couldn’t hear anything as I had been asleep with my earplugs snuggly set in my ears!! Apparently some time during the night a little mouse had let itself into the van and was scampering around and playing in the rubbish bag, it was this scampering that woke Pete so early. Unfortunately he was unable to catch the mouse with his bare hands so he had to be satisfied with the thought that he would set some traps later in the day and hopefully these would catch the mouse!!
This was the view at Whalebone campground from my caravan door!! |
I managed to get back to sleep and woke again at a more reasonable hour – 7.30am. Once up I could see that the mouse had had a little gourmet feast, it had chewed its way into the garbage bag and nibbled on some pumpkin skin and then nibbled into the bread bag and helped itself to some fresh bread crusts!!Once the mouse had eaten his fill he went and had a play on the end of Callum’s bed and also clambered about on the shelves above the sink. How did I know all this – the mouse had left little mouse poo’s everywhere that I had to clean up.
We left Whalebone Campground after breakfast and with two traps set for the mouse. When we stopped for morning tea, the traps were still set and there was no mouse to be seen.
We stopped for lunch at a lovely free camp beside Murchison River and there were still two set traps and no mouse to be seen. Pete bravely said maybe the mouse abandoned the caravan!! I was not so confident.
Murchison River - from Ross Graham Lookout |
On the way to Kalbarri we had to drive through Kalbarri National Park, so we took this opportunity to look at Hawk’s Lookout and Ross Graham Lookout. The kids were happy as these both had very short walks.
We arrived at Kalbarri township late in the afternoon and settled in for two nights at the local caravan park. Once again we ran into the Tunnel Creek grey nomads who we have now had the opportunity to see at a number of towns along our journey – yes we even know their names now – Ken and Shirley from South Australia. We compared notes on where we and they had been since we last met up with them in Coral Bay, it appears that we have been following each other down the coast!! They are staying in Kalbarri for a week so this is probably the last time we will see them.
We headed into town for some supplies for lunch tomorrow and Zac checked with the local tackle shop on where he was able to fish; we are hoping to drop a line in tomorrow afternoon after we get back from exploring Kalbarri National Park.
Tonight as we go to sleep the mouse traps are set, I hope that either the mouse has vacated the van OR the trap catches it. What I don’t want is the mouse scampering around all night keeping everyone awake!!
