Day 98 29/06/2011 Cape Range National Park - Quobba Station

Day 98  29/06/2011 Cape Range National Park -  Quobba Station
When we woke up this morning it was rainy, not just a cloudy sky but really raining, buckets of water falling out of the sky, this is the most rain we have seen since we began this big adventure!! Luckily we did most of the outside packing up last night in anticipation of the rain today.

Quobba Blowholes

We were on the road quite early but alas so were the kangaroos so it was a slow drive out of the National Park. We weren’t sorry to be leaving because the rain was forecast for the next few days, we were hoping that we were not driving into it!! We stopped briefly in Exmouth to pick up our DVD from the whale shark trip and then headed on out of town, back down the boring drive between Exmouth and Coral Bay.  To be frank the drive between Coral Bay and Quobba Blowholes was as uninteresting as the drive between Coral Bay and Exmouth.  But I did get to drive part of the way as Pete was feeling a little sleepy!!
We decided that we would stop over night at the Quobba Blowholes and then head into Carnarvon tomorrow.  On the way into the campground we stopped at the blowholes which were similar to the little blowhole at Kiama, and there just gazing out over the ocean we observed Humpback Whales migrating north.  We called the kids and asked them to bring the binoculars.  Before the kids arrived I was privileged to watch a humpback whale breech.  I have never seen whales breeching before and excitably squealed to Pete “look, look it’s breeching, oh my that was amazing” unfortunately Pete only saw the giant plash that the whale left behind. We spent another 20 minutes watching the whale’s spout as they headed north, but they didn’t breech again.
We headed into the campground which was a little like driving into deliverance country!! There were caravans, motorhomes and camper trailers shoved in all over the place and then there was a shanty town, some sort of grouping of fishing shacks that utilised any building material that was lying around.  Even though we drove the full 2kms of the campground area there was not a spot for us so we decided to head to Quobba Station.  Quobba Station is a working sheep station as well as being one of the five most popular balloon fishing spots in Australia.  For us though it was just a place to camp for the night.
