Day 2 25/3/2011
Well we survived our first night on the road!! We are really travellers!! Even managing to get internet connection and talked to friends on Skype. On the road early…..not sure why but it appears that is what travellers do, we were headed for Wagga Wagga. When I packed the van I constantly thought “should I / will I” pack particular items e.g. foundation and lipstick (no), or the wireless mouse and keyboard for the laptop (no) but maybe when I looked at Callum’s PJ’s I should have thought yes and the bucket that we left in the laundry should have also been a yes!! Anyway off to Wagga we were going for a spot of shopping, Oh my how that is fun with the kids.
Back on the road after the Wagga shopping expedition …parking a caravan in a suburban shopping carpark was always going to be fun, we headed to the Gerry Berry Rest Area for lunch, sticking as we are to the “no macca’s on this trip, we have our own yummy food” not sure the kids agree but the rest stop was clean and lots of room to chuck the footy around, just to get rid of some of our energy. Day two travelling the kids are handling it well.
Heading South West we passed Narranderra by as we headed to Hay, Camps 6 out on my lap I studied the camping options – lots if you didn’t want a toilet. Pete is still pretty wedded to the whole idea of a toilet so we chose the Birdage Rest Area about halfway between Narranderra and Hay. We checked out the facilities and I think the kids and I are starting to realise that a tin can with a lid above the ground isn’t really a toilet!! Not in the way we think of toilet.
But the rest area was beside the Murrimbidgee so the fishing rods were out and off we went. The river was full and running fast, Zac is still convinced that the Murrimbidgee is tidal even with us trying to explain how far inland we are, his obvious question ….so how come it is flowing so fast?? Where is it going?? Well good questions and one I’m sure his teacher will answer when he gets back to school.
Started the kids on their journals tonight – well that was like pulling hens teeth. Both Callum and Claudia have started doing their work books whilst travelling, Zac well he is just interested in where are we going to stop and will there be a river. He really is not my academic but he did write his journal so I’m happy.
We were joined in the rest area by two other vans and after a quick chat we all headed to bed. It is amazing how exhausting this travelling can be!!
