Day 48 10/05/2011 – Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park)
I am beginning to think that this adventure is really just a cover story for checking out central Australia health services. This morning I took Claudia to Katherine Hospital A&E as she had developed a very nasty rash in a very sensitive area on her body. Poor poppet she has been itchy and very uncomfortable for a day and sleep has been elusive for both her and me. After waiting a few hours to be seen (at least the wait times are shorter out here) the doctor determined that she had a localised heat rash!! Well I’m not surprised given the weather lately!! Anyway as long as I keep her dosed on phenergan she should be OK.
Katherine Gorge from the lookout |
Whilst we were at the hospital Pete and the boys went fishing, today they learnt that you should always fish off a ledge not just the river bank as it is believed that a salt water crocodile is less likely to attack you if you are on a ledge, if you are just on the shore then they can just run up and grab you!! Of course this piece of advice is contradicted by the stories you hear about saltwater crocodile’s attacking fishermen on boats!! I’m beginning to think this fishing caper is far too dangerous up here!!
After lunch I took the boys for a short walk up to a lookout over the river, it was short but very steep!! The boys to their credit didn’t complain too much. The phenergan had had its desired effect on Claudia, she was snoozing on her bed.
The local bats - there are 100's in the trees!! |
Whilst we have been here the kids have also enjoyed watching the antics of the local bat colony, they are very noisy bats shattering and bickering all day. Pete is mumbling because their noise continues all night….he mumbled something about a shot gun would keep them quiet so a man could sleep!! I mumbled something in reply about this being a national park!!
Happy Birthday Grandma!! We miss you xxxooo
love the mumblings
