Day 72 03/06/2011 Fitzroy Crossing – Nillibubbica Rest Area (100kms from Broome)

Day 72 03/06/2011 Fitzroy Crossing – Nillibubbica Rest Area (100kms from Broome)
Some days I pinch myself with how fortunate we are to be having this adventure!! Today I am again in awe of the country in which I am fortunate to live and can only encourage everyone to travel it and explore.  Before leaving the Fitzroy Crossing area we headed up to Geikie Gorge only about 20kms out of town.  Geikie Gorge is not a big towering gorge like others we have been to but it is spectacular in its own way as it is a limestone rock that dates back to the Devonian period.  We had initially decided that we would do the river walk as the brochure explained that this would give us a great view of the gorge but on impulse we jumped on the cruise that was leaving just as we arrived.
Geikie Gorge

The cruise went for about 1½hr and was actually affordable for our family, phew, because the river walk was 3kms along soft river sand, it would have been like walking over soft beach sand!!  And the children were very happy to skip the walk!! Pete stoically said “if you want to do it honey we will….” but he didn’t sound all that convincing and I didn’t really fancy giving my calf muscles such a big work out.

one of the many locals relaxing!!

The cruise gave us an opportunity to learn about the creation of the gorge and to also check out some of the locals!! The kids had a great time crocodile spotting but thank goodness only fresh water crocs in this section of the Fitzroy River.  We also got to see the devastation from the last flood and were staggered at how high in the trees logs were left from the flood waters. It was hard enough to comprehend the deluge of water that a normal wet season brings but it was impossible for us to fully grasp the size of last wet season.

The log in the trees was left after the
2010 wet season

Back into the car we went for the drive to Nillibubbica Rest Area. We had decided not to make the extra 100kms to Broome, as although the kids are travelling really well by 4pm they were starting to annoy each other and us!!.
